Leiko Ikemura

1951 born in Tsu Mie, Japan | lives and works in Köln and Berlin

The cultural borderlines of the Japan-born artist Leiko Ikemura (living in Germany for almost 30 years now) are mirrored in the dreamlike world of images in her work. In her drawings, paintings and sculptures, she focuses on the definition of the body and its relationship to the environment, coexistence of time and space in an almost meditative-style. The displayed objects or mostly female figures appear as standing at the transition between this world and beyond, between day and night. As if arising from an informal primary mass, the bodies in the paintings and sculptures only tentatively and seemingly provisional take on figure.
